Abstract

Metal chips generated from machining processes such as turning, milling, and shaping represent a form of metal waste that can disrupt workspace efficiency and safety in production workshops, especially in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). This study aims to design a chip compactor machine capable of compressing machining waste, and to analyze the structural strength of its main components to ensure design reliability and operational safety. The design process involved need identification, conceptual and detailed design using CAD software, followed by structural analysis using the Finite Element Method (FEM). The primary components analyzed include the pressing shaft and the machine frame, with key parameters such as Von Mises stress, displacement, and factor of safety (FOS) evaluated. Simulation results show that the developed design produces a maximum Von Mises stress of 2.38 × 10⁷ N/m², a maximum displacement of 0.178 mm, and a FOS of 6.3, which exceeds the standard safety threshold (≥1.5). Therefore, the proposed chip compactor machine is deemed safe and effective for implementation in small-scale production workshops to support better waste handling and workspace organization..
